Our Cosmetic Standard Wood Variations

Cosmetic Standards & Refund Policy

At Makau Makers, we take pride in crafting each piece of furniture by hand using solid hardwoods and traditional techniques. Every item we create is one-of-a-kind — shaped by nature, craftsmanship, and the individuality of the materials we use.

Because of this, we ask all customers to review the following standards before placing an order. By placing an order with us, you acknowledge and agree to these terms.

🪵 Natural Variations in Wood & Stain

Every board is different — just like every tree. You can expect unique grain patterns and slight color variations in every finished piece. While we always use the stain or paint color requested, exact color matches to previous pieces or reference photos cannot be guaranteed. Wood absorbs stain differently from one board to another, which creates beautiful natural variation — not defects.

We do not match stain colors from photos. Custom stain requests must be provided by the customer along with the desired wood type. Once received, we will follow your direction, but we cannot rework finishes that don’t match your expectations — as each piece of wood reacts uniquely to color.

🪚 Sanding, Texture & Stain Depth

The finish of your table impacts how the stain looks:

  • Finely sanded surfaces may appear lighter in color.

  • Distressed or rougher surfaces may absorb stain more deeply, appearing darker.

So, if you're requesting a smooth finish based on a photo of a distressed piece, please note: it will look different, even if the same stain is used.

🪓 Band Sawn Oak

Band sawn oak is full of character — with saw marks, texture, and occasional waves in the surface. Some spots may be sanded smoother to ensure a level tabletop. These characteristics are part of the look. If you prefer a smooth surface throughout, we recommend choosing our smooth oak option instead.

✨ Handmade Character & Variation

As with all handcrafted furniture, you may notice:

  • Open knots

  • Visible brush strokes

  • Natural imperfections

  • Distress marks, micro-cracks, or filler

  • Joint lines or slight dimensional variation (up to ~1")

We build with intention, not perfection. These details are part of what makes handcrafted furniture truly unique.

If you prefer machine-made consistency and flawlessness, handcrafted solid wood furniture may not be the right fit.

🌿 Wood Movement & Seasonal Gaps

Solid wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. This may cause minor gaps between tabletop boards over time — a natural and expected characteristic that does not affect structural integrity.

If you prefer a seamless surface, we recommend our jointed top option. These tops expand as one piece, reducing visible gaps, but still retain natural knots and character.

📦 Damage & Defects

In the rare event that your order is built inaccurately or has a defect as defined by our Cosmetic Standards, we will replace the item and correct the issue. We also cover any damages that occur in shipping, provided they are properly documented upon delivery as per our instructions.

❌ Returns & Refunds

Because each item is made to order, we do not offer returns or refunds for buyer’s remorse. Custom furniture involves significant time, material, and freight costs, and we ask that you consider this carefully before purchasing.

⏳ Lead Times

All quoted lead times are estimates, not guarantees. While we often finish ahead of schedule, unexpected delays can happen. We’d rather deliver your furniture a little late and up to standard, than on time and below our quality threshold.

If you're planning for a special occasion (holiday, party, etc.), we’ll do our best to accommodate — but we cannot promise a specific delivery date.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call, text, or email us before placing an order. We’re here to make sure you love your piece for years to come.
